2016 Travel: Discover 5 of Mexico's Hidden Haciendas
A rich history adds depth to holiday hideaways, which become more than just a vacation destination and also a historical landmark of sorts, like these five of Mexico's haciendas from the Yucatan.
Hacienda Uayamon
This Yucatan Peninsula estate was built between the 17th and 19th centuries, as per Conde Nast Traveller. It has buildings that "are a distinctive part of the Yucatan's landscape and cultural milieu, and their great age." It also has the distinction of being in an area near Edzná, which is an archaeological wonder dating back 600-300 B.C.
"What makes this property so strikingly unique however is the piscina, which is essentially one long plunge pool set in the middle of massive columns and romantic ruins," Latina noted.
Hacienda Teya
This is another Yucatecan estate, albeit offering a more intimate experience with its six suite accommodation. This hideaway's restaurant, which is famous in its own right, has played host to the likes of Hillary Clinton and Queen Sophia of Spain.
"Teya was a cattle ranch and farm until the henequen boom of the 19th century," CN Traveller described of the place in another piece. "The main house, with its colonial baroque entrance and belfry, resembles the façades of the churches you see around the peninsula, while the machine house is now a spacious salon with an indoor pool."
Hacienda Katanchel
If you want a destination that's rather easy to reach but is also as ultra private, at least by the Merida-Cancun highway, this tranquil estate is your pick. Though accessible, it is pretty isolated and is surrounded by forests.
The 17th-century property is a 50-acre spread that includes tropical gardens and a main building that has only 4 grand suites.
As it has been erected on a Mayan site, it has orchards reminiscent of the Mayan style. Unsurprisingly, you can find a Mayan ruin - Ake - nearby that is worth checking out.
Hacienda Temozon
"Temozon's draw is two-fold - you go for the sacred cenote (natural sinkhole) swimming experience (there's one nearby and one located directly on the property, which doubles as the spa), then you stay for the delicioso Cochinita pibil eating experience," Latina suggested.
The estate has 28 rooms, with singer Shakira being one of the rather famous guests who have stayed in the hacienda.
Hacienda Xcanatun
If you want luxe accommodations that's not as isolated or intimate as the previous ones, this is the place. Located right in the biggest city of the Yucatan - Merida - this place has a terracotta-and-cream facade, marble mosaics, filigree, and antique furniture. If you're raring to be out and about, there's the city of Merida for you to explore right at your doorstep.
