Another Mexican drug lord is planning to enter the Hollywood scene just two weeks after rumors circulated that Joaquin “El Chapo” intends to have a movie made about his life. Many might find Edgar Valdez Villarreal, aka “La Barbie,” interesting.

American actor Armie Hammer recently told BuzzFeed that he secured the exclusive life rights for the drug lord La Barbie, a rival of El Chapo. Hammer said that having direct access to the man will provide them with access to stories that were never meant to be known to the public.

Latin Correspondent stated that Villareal, 42, was extradited to the United States in 2015 and pleaded guilty to charges of drug trafficking and money laundering in Atlanta. He was raised in Laredo, Texas by a middle-class suburban family. He also attended a high school where he played football and was encouraged to attend college. He started his drug operations by distributing marijuana in Texas. Afterward, he distributed cocaine in other states. He later dealt with the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico to smuggle cocaine in the United States.

Latin Correspondent noted that La Barbie was different from traditional drug lords. He was born in America, had blonde hair and green eyes and was stylish. La Barbie was also ruthless and violent. He sometimes recorded executions of rival cartel members on tape and forwarded these to the media. He was also known for not harming the women and children of his enemies. La Barbie was arrested in 2010 when he was a top lieutenant of the Beltran-Leyva cartel.

BuzzFeed said that Hammer aimed to acquire the rights to the drug boss’s life after he was arrested in Texas for marijuana charges in 2012. Hammer’s wife, Elizabeth Chambers, talked to the top lawyer in the place, who also happened to be La Barbie’s attorney.

“Elizabeth contacted me when Armie was still in jail over a little marijuana charge and she talked to me for the first 20 minutes about getting life rights to Edgar’s story, and then she said, ‘By the way, my husband is in jail. Can you get him out?’” said Kent Schaffer.

The couple worked for almost three years to acquire the rights to tell La Barbie’s story. They kept in touch with one of his family members to gain trust. Now, they plan to produce a TV series or film based on the criminal’s life.
