American Tourist Murdered in Caribbean Beach
Tourists enjoying a vacation on the Caribbean island of Grenada were shocked by very tragic news on Sunday. While strolling on a deserted beach, a 39-year-old woman was murdered and possibly even raped after she and her husband were attacked by a man allegedly brandishing a cutlass, according to The Telegraph.
The victim, who remains unnamed as of writing, had just arrived on the island paradise the day before. She had been walking with her husband along a deserted area of La Sagesse beach, which was connected to the main beach through a short mangrove path.
As the attack happened, the husband was able to escape and quickly ran for help. By the time he was able to get back, however, his wife had already been murdered. There were also indications that she was raped before she was killed.
Though authorities have already launched a full-scale investigation, reports have emerged that the man behind the murder had already turned himself in. The suspect has been identified as Dave Martin Benjamin, an ex-convict who was recently released from prison, reported Yahoo! News.
Benjamin had allegedly walked into the St. David police station, confessing to the crime and turning himself in.
Police, however, have not issued an official statement about the incident. The resort on the island where the couple stayed in has not given a statement about the matter as well.
One of the guests in the island, British journalist Sue Hardy, has provided some details about what transpired during Sunday's fateful morning. Enjoying a vacation with her family, Hardy stated that she and her family suddenly heard a commotion near the front of the restaurant, about 11:30 a.m. local time.
"Some guys were shouting and people were running. At first, we didn't know what was happening. But gradually rumors started spreading among the tourists," she said.
Though the hotel staff were tight-lipped as the event transpired, guests began to become edgy due to the air of apprehension in the resort. Apart from this, hardy also stated that some guests spotted the owner of the resort rushing to his jeep and speeding away, possibly to coordinate with the local authorities, according to The Daily Mail.
As word of the murder spread, villagers also came down to the beach.
"They were just standing around, aghast at what had happened. There was such a sad sight -- she'd left her beach shoes lying on the sand near the restaurant," Hardy said.
Grenada is one of the prime tourist spots in the Caribbean, with picturesque beaches and a community that is used to foreigners. Prior to Sunday's incident, it has also prided itself as being one of the safest islands in the Caribbean.
