Aaron Hernandez Jersey eBay Auctions Fetch Record Prices
Aaron Hernandez is quite possibly the most talked-about athlete on the face of the planet right now, though unfortunately, for all of the wrong reasons. Now it appears that his memorabilia is getting a popularity boost as well, as his jerseys are quickly becoming valuable collectors' items.
The NFL has already stopped retail sales of the alleged murderer's jersey, and his former team, the New England Patriots, have even instituted a trade-back program where fans with a Hernandez jersey can trade it in at Gillette Stadium for a new jersey of another Patriots player.
Those actions have done little to dissuade those in the eBay community from cashing in on the former tight end's infamy. A number of jerseys have already hit the online auction community, and initial results appear to indicate that they are going for a premium.
"I figured I'd try to dump it. Where can I wear this thing now? I'd receive a lot of backlash," Ben Kent of Virginia Beach told CNNMoney. "It might send the wrong message."
Kent put his #81 Hernandez jersey up on eBay for the modest price of just $50, thinking it was unlikely people would pay much more for a likely criminal's jersey. He was wrong. With his auction set to end Monday afternoon, it has already received bids in excess of $200.
Kent isn't the only one seeing success with Hernandez's misfortune; eBay is loaded with his memorabilia, most of which is seeing unprecedented interest and bids. A signed jersey of Hernandez is now running at around $600, and a jersey he actually played in has already gone for over $1,000.
Hernandez is currently facing the prospect of going to trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd. The current theory is that Hernandez killed Lloyd, who was a friend of his, because Lloyd had been talking to people Hernandez was at odds with. He is also being investigated for the murder of two other people in Boston last year.
"I'm still trying to process what's going on," Lloyd's sister, Olivia Thibou said. "I feel like I relive every day in my dreams. I go to sleep and I relive everything that's broadcast on TV. I relive the night that we found out. I relive just everything. Even when I'm sleeping at night, I feel like it's just a bad dream I'm not waking up from."
