Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Freddie Roach Names Puerto Rican's Possible Opponents
Miguel Cotto continues to be in hiatus but his trainer Freddie Roach is still actively working on who the Puerto Rican pug could possibly face next.
Just recently, Roach mentioned the name of Juan Manuel Marquez as a perfect opponent, though that comes with a cloud of doubt.
The 42-year-old Mexican brawler has not fought since 2014, reportedly due to issues with his knees. His last fight was against Mike Alvarado, which he won via unanimous decision. Despite his knee issues, ‘El Dinamita’ never officially said that he was retiring.
For his part, Marquez seems to be interested in such a match though there could be certain stipulations on the table. One is the weight at which he and Cotto would be fighting on and a ‘rehydration clause’ via Boxingscene.com.
Other than Marquez, there were other names on the list under consideration for Cotto. That includes WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, IBF champion Kell Brook and Liam Smith.
The list brings together many big names in the sport though Saunders could be a hard one to consider, in a separate report from Boxingscene.com.
Saunders seems to have upped his value by wanting more money and perks for anyone he would potentially face next.
Gennady Golovkin and company had their eyes on possibly facing Saunders this April but the Briton ended up wanting more money since Triple G was after something he had via ESPN.
It will not be surprising if he makes the same outrageous demand against Cotto as he may likely consider it a fight back to redemption for the former champion.
Kell Brook could be an interesting choice, especially if Amir Khan doesn’t close anything with the British boxer. Brook is set to defend his title against mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier next month but a big fight with Khan could also happen by June.
The last of that bit was Khan wanted a bigger split of 80-20. Brook manager Eddie Hearn countered with a 60-40 split instead.
Liam Smith on the other hand is an interesting candidate. Ironically, he was in the headlines recently but as a possible opponent to Cotto’s last conqueror, Canelo Alvarez. Smith, who has also been tied up to possibly facing Amir Khan.
While nothing is final, Roach may want to consider another name – former world champion Demetrius Andrade.
Vowing to become the WBC super-welterweight champion, he has tossed his name in the mix of possible opponents for Cotto.
"I don't see why Cotto would be fighting Marquez when he could be fighting me, a real super welterweight,” says Andrade via Sky Sports.
One thing working to Cotto’s advantage is that he is not short on opponents for his road back to redemption.
