Could Kate Upton's 'The Other Woman' Defeat 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and 'Rio 2'?
"The Other Woman" is set to beat "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" after reigning for three weekends.
The new Cameron Diaz film, directed by Nick Cassavetes ("The Notebook"), is set to open with $17.5 million. The movie has scored negative reviews and currently has a 34 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with many recent female-driven comedies such as "Bridesmaids" doing strong work in the marketplace, this movie is looking promising. It is also guaranteed to attract Kate Upton fans as it marks her film debut. The film will be released in 3,204 theatres.
Meanwhile, "Captain America" is still predicted to hold strongly and is likely to make an estimated $15.5 million. The film has already grossed $207 million and is likely to have made $235 million by the end of the weekend. That would make "Captain America" the highest-grossing Marvel movie after the "Iron Man" series or "The Avengers."
Two films will be dueling for third place: "Rio 2" and "Brick Mansions." "Rio 2" has already grossed $81 million and is likely to make $11 million this weekend, bringing its total to $92 million. However, the movie continues to trail the first installment and is unlikely to reach the $143 million total of its predecessor.
Meanwhile, Paul Walker's "Brick Mansions" could make $10 million, but could always bring in more since it his last movie and will likely bring more of his fans to the theaters. However, it is important to note that Walker was not able to make last year's "Hours" a hit the box office and the film received a rather short theatrical release. The film cost $28 million and Relativity is releasing the film in 2,647 theaters.
The faith-based film "Heaven is for Real" is likely to make another $8 million. The movie surpassed expectations last weekend and continued its success throughout the week, topping the charts on Tuesday and Wednesday. The movie has already made a total of $36 million and is likely to reach $46 million by the end of the weekend.
The other new release "The Quiet Ones," will open in 2,027 theaters. However, Lionsgate and pundits do not have high expectations for the movie. The film has negative reviews and currently has a 40 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. "The Quiet Ones" is likely to flop and make $6 million. That would be the second horror film in a row to underperform. Two weekends ago, Relativity opened "Oculus" with $12 million and that film has only made $22 million.
In arthouse theaters, A24 will release the one-man film "Locke" staring Tom Hardy. The movie received a lot of buzz during the festival circuit and has obtained positive reviews. "Locke" is the latest one-man film following "Buried," "All is Lost," and "Gravity." While "Gravity" was huge hit, "Buried" only brought in $1 million while "All is Lost" made a disappointing $6 million. A24 has emphasized Hardy's performance but based on the performance of their last few films ("Enemy" and "Under the Skin"), this film does not look very promising. "Enemy" was the lowest grossing Jake Gyllenhaal movie of all time while the Scarlett Johansson starrer "Under the Skin" was unable to maintain its early momentum once it opened in wide release.
Meanwhile, Radius TWC will release the Cannes hit "Blue Ruin" in 12 theaters and on VOD. The movie has had a huge promotional campaign but based on the distributor's past performances, this is unlikely to be a huge hit. The company's biggest film thus far has been the Oscar-winning documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" and that movie was only able to make $4 million. Radius TWC's biggest narrative release was "Only God Forgives," which only brought in $779,000.
Other opening films will be Francois Ozon's "Young and Beautiful," which will be released by IFC in theaters and On Demand and Sony Pictures Classics' "For No Good Reason" with Johnny Depp.
A number of Indie films will expand into new markets. The biggest film is The Weinstein Company's "The Railway Man," starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. The movie has been in theaters for two weekends and has underperformed. Currently, it has made $300,000 and is expanding to 156 theaters. The weekend will be a big test for the movie as it will show whether or not it can cross over to the mainstream.
Sony Pictures Classics will expand Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" into 53 theaters. The movie has made a solid $247,000 and with good word of mouth, it could continue its breakthrough run. The film stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston and it has compiled up excellent reviews.
