Minecraft Gampelay News, Launch, and Update: PS4 and Vita Edition Releases Could Be Months Away
It has been long hoped for, discussed and planned that Mojang, the developer that brought Minecraft to the world, would bring to the newest age of next-gen consoles.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Mojang Chief Word Officer Owen Hill said the company is currently working on the Minecraft: PlayStation 4 and PS Vita Editions and is expected to be released in either the second or third quarter of this year.
"Yes - we are planning to release on PS4 and Vita at around Q2-Q3 this year," Hill said in a written statement. "We're not able to share more specific dates yet though. We'd rater be vague than disappoint people! They probably won't be released simultaneously. We're going to release on each format as soon as it's ready."
Q2 goes from April 1st to June 30th, while Q3 extends from July 1st to September 30th.
Hill also wrote in the comments section of the European PlayStation blog that the company is working on the cross-buy/upgrade option details on Sony's consoles and owners of the digital version could possibly get a discount on the Vita version when it is released.
Mojang's plan is for owners of the PS3 edition to be able to transfer to the PS4 version but still doesn't know how it will work on the Vita.
"We're still testing PS3-Vita save compatibility, along with a lot of other things," Hill told Polygon. "It's too early to confirm what will or won't make it in."
The PS4 version was initially supposed to be released in conjunction with the release of the console last fall, but in December, the developers had to push the date of the game's release back to 2014, according to Polygon.
The Minecraft: PS Edition is set for a release date of May 16 in North America and a May 14 release for European gamers. The digital version for the PlayStation Network was launched at the end of last year.
4J Studios are developing the PlayStation ports after launching the Xbox 360 versions, which has recently sold 10 million copies since its May 2013 launch.
