Athletes have a very large influence today, because of the wide range of activity and so many different sports being played around the world. Different types of sports are being played constantly around the world at all times. The Summer and Winter Olympics also have a huge influence because nations from all around the globe are competing and watching their favorite athletes. Some athletes are very vocal about their political stances and others are the first to do something that is not socially accepted by many others.
Of the 100 people that made the list, 59 were male and 41 were female. Despite sports being looked at as a male dominated category, it still features two females. More and more female athletes are making a difference in today's world.
Of these five athletes listed, all play in different sports leagues and two of the athletes were born outside of the United States. These athletes are listed because they came out and took a stand even though many disagreed with them. Others made the list because of their loud voice on the big stage and their on-field performance. These athletes know that the decisions they make will forever be remembered and have a profound impact because of the viewers and followers they have. To many people, they are idols.
Athletes today may not be able to shape the world like politicians or scientists. But athletes know that with so many followers, they have a loud voice and a big impact on many people. Even though Hall of Fame power forward once said "I am not a role model," referring to all athletes, the reality is, athletes are big role models for many kids today.
Let's take a look at the five most influential athletes today, according to TIME Magazine.
