A 16-year-old student was stabbed to death Friday morning inside of a Connecticut high school, just hours before she planned to attend her school prom. Officials are now investigating whether the attacker killed the teenager after she rejected his request to be her prom date.

The victim was identified as Maren Sanchez, a junior at Jonathan Law High School in Milford. She was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital about 30 minutes after the fatal stabbing, which took place at 7:14 a.m.

The suspect, who is a junior student at the school, is currently in custody, but his name is being withheld since he is a minor.

FoxNews.com reports that a student at the school said that a teacher witnessed the attack. According to their account, Sanchez was asked to the prom by the attacker inside of a school stairwell. However, Sanchez, who has a boyfriend, rejected him. In turn, the suspect began to strangle her, pushed her down a flight of stairs and then proceed to stab her.

Two male educators eventually detained the suspect and held him in the principal's office until police arrived on the scene. The student described the suspect while he was handcuffed, saying that he "looked angry."

"There was blood on her neck. It was awful," said Sam Garcia, a junior at the school, according to The Courant. "I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out."

Back in March, Sanchez posted a picture of herself in her prom dress on a school-affliated Facebook group page.

Milford Police Chief Keith Mello asked the superintendent to dismiss students for the day so officers could process the scene.

"Jonathan Law High School is an active crime scene," he said.
