FC Barcelona Superstar Neymar Needs to Settle $113K in Owed Taxes
Brazilian captain Neymar has been in the news lately, mostly about whether he would leave FC Barcelona and consider offers from other teams like Real Madrid.
While not many are convinced the 23-year-old forward would leave Barcelona, there are other pressing issues right now that he has to attend to.
Per a report from Reuters UK, Neymar and his father have been ordered to settle nearly 460,000 reais (about 79,250 pounds) in taxes covering 2007 and 2008.
An appeal was filed on the claim, something that goes way back to the time the younger Neymar was still playing for Santos. The appeal was shut down, with Judge Bruno Cezar da Cunha Teixeira claiming that there were no proper grounds to grant the appeal.
As it stands, the 23-year-old needs to settle 193,300 reais while his father is required to settle 266,300 reais since his son was still under 18 at that time.
The judge shunned the appeal of Neymar who alleged that they did not declare the money for tax since it was payment made to the NR Sports company. With that said, the money was not given directly to the player, and thus, was not part of his income per their claims.
In line with this, 188.8 million reais of the Neymars’ assets were frozen last September for a tax evasion case from 2011 to 2013. Neymar was accused of not settling 63.3 million reais worth of taxes between 2011 and 2013 for claims that the player was a part-owner in involved firms.
Earlier this month, Neymar was also hit with another off-field issue involving Brazilian investment fund DIS.
DIS claims that they were cheated out of the 40 percent due to them during Neymar’s transfer.
"DIS, which held 40 percent of Neymar's sports rights when he was in Brazil, claims it only received that percentage for €17.1 million that Santos was allegedly paid for the Brazilian when, according to high court investigations, the deal cost €83.3 million (£62 million)," as previously reported through the Guardian.
That case also involved Barcelona president Sandro Rosell, club chief Josep Bartomeu and Neymar's parents despite previous requests by Neymar to dismiss the probe. Unfortunately, the presiding judge feels that there could be cause, and hence, further examination.
While things seem a bit rocky for Neymar off the football field, it remains to be seen if these external distractions could affect him professionally.
Neymar has gained new ground for his sterling showing last year, capped by being among the finalists for the 2015 Ballon d’Or world’s best male athlete. Teammate Lionel Messi won that award, with Neymar finishing behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
