Police have charged a 54-year-old Ohio woman who was caught on camera stealing a toy from a baby's gravesite at Mansfield Memorial Park in Ontario, Ohio.

The suspect was identified as Frieda Kay Shade of Mansfield, Ohio, after a surveillance video of her stealing a toy animal from a child's grave on Easter weekend went viral. In the video, Shade can be seen removing a large stuffed yellow duck from the grave of baby Hayden "Tank" Cole, who died at 14 months old in 2007. According to Detective Jon Sigler, Shade turned herself into police on Wednesday and explained to authorities that she took the toy because a stray dog was running around in the area.

Shade has been charged with petty theft, but her attorney Charles Robinson said she will plead not guilty. She is set to appear in court on May 8 in Ontario.

Detective Sigler told the Los Angeles Times that Ontario police set up a surveillance camera near the baby's grave site back in July 2012 after the child's parents noticed that the items they left there were disappearing.

"They asked me to keep an eye on [the grave] specifically around the holidays because that seems to be the time when thieves were striking," Sigler said. "So I would put the camera up for every holiday in hopes of catching someone. Unfortunately, I never was able to get an image or video that was of good enough quality to get the person identified."

Shade was charged Thursday with petty theft, which is a first-degree misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Shade's lawyer told USA Today they sympathize "for a child who has expired" but that "mitigating circumstances" surround the case.
