Boxing: Amir Khan Needs to Choose Between Kell Brook, Danny Garcia Soon
Amir Khan has been out of the ring for almost eight months, but reports indicated that he could fight again in March.
ESPN UK reported that Khan could appear in one of the undercards of the Keith Porter vs. Shawn Porter main event happening at the Mohegan Sun Casino on March 12.
"We're looking at a date in the first two of March but we've not got an opponent confirmed yet," said Khan's father Shah. "Al Haymon is looking into it and he will come to us as soon as he has something.
It will be interesting to see the condition that Khan is in after long layoff. He last fought in May last year, winning via unanimous decision over Chris Algieri. In the eyes of many, that performance was hardly one of the best that Khan had to show.
From there, Khan was hoping to land a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September but failed. It was the third time he would be shunned by the undefeated American boxer, who opted to face Andre Berto instead.
His name cropped up again as the first possible opponent for former sparring mate Manny Pacquiao for Apr. 9. Pacquiao eventually decided to face Timothy Bradley Jr., leaving Khan out in the cold yet again.
Moving forward, Khan has two options after his March warm-up fight. Danny Garcia and Kell Brook are his options and one may eventually stand out.
Against Garcia, he is the mandatory challenger as officially announced by the WBC. In fact, the WBC has held voluntary fights for Garcia, which indicates that they want to see Garcia defend his crown against Khan per Boxingscene.com.
Khan lost to Garcia back in 2012 via TKO and such seems to be an interesting twist that could make the fight big.
But equally big is a possible fight date with countryman Kell Brook. Both have been at it since last year with Khan shunning Brook since he believed it won’t be a big PPV draw. That is in the eyes of Khan though.
Khan eventually wanted a bigger chunk of the fight purse, demanding an 80-20 split. Brook and manager Eddie Hearn scoffed such and countered with a 60-40 split in favour of Khan instead.
"There's ongoing contact with them and that always gives you hope," said Hearn. "There's a genuine want to make the fight happen and when you have that it gives you hope. When you realise everyone wants the fight it can get made and if everyone is sensible it will get made."
Right now, everything is at the hands of Khan. Will it be Garcia or Brook?
