For team captain John Terry, ending his career in Chelsea would have been a perfect ending to his football career. But latest reports revealed that his dream may not happen at all.

The Blues have told the 35-year-old centre back that his contract will not be renewed by the end of the season, marking a halt to his 18-year stint with the ballclub. Terry got word of it before their win over Arsenal.

“Ideally I would have loved to stay, but the club’s moving in a different direction. I needed to know now, like I have done every January, and sometimes it takes a couple of months to get done. Unfortunately, it was a ‘no’,” said Terry via the Washington Post.

Rather than be upset, Terry took it as a professional and felt that he had a hand in the decision. He knew that he wasn’t playing great ball in the first four or five games he appeared in, a reason why he never bothered to ask management the reason behind the non-renewal of his contract.

Rather than carry on with a dampened spirit, Terry made it clear that he intends to play out his contract at a high level. He wants to exit Chelsea in good terms, proof that his love for the team and its fans is undying.

"The club will move on. No player is ever bigger than the club. Ideally I would have loved to stay, but the club's moving in a different direction. No doubt they'll sign one or two great centre-backs. I want to come back as a Chelsea supporter in years to come with my kids and see the team doing great," says Terry via ESPN FC.

There is however a small window of hope for the Chelsea captain. While his contract may be up and not renewed, his fortunes with Chelsea could still change.

“He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea Football Club and a superb captain and, as such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open.”

Terry added that he doesn’t see himself signing up with another Premier League club.

"I couldn't do that to the Chelsea fans. I couldn't play for another Premier League club. It will be elsewhere for sure. I don't know where, and I leave that to the people in charge of me."

Right now, it remains to be seen if he follows the footsteps of his former teammates, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole via The Mirror. Both have moved over to New York City FC and LA Galaxy respectively so there is a chance he could take his act there.

Terry feels he still has a couple of years of play ahead of him and the two teams previously mentioned are likely to express interest on the Blues icon.
