Bret "The Hitman" Hart revealed on Monday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 58-year-old former pro wrestling star made his announcement via an Instagram post, where he also noted he will soon be undergoing surgery for his condition.

"I've had a great lifelong dance and I'm a survivor of many hard battles," Hart wrote in his long post. "I now face my toughest battle. With hesitation and fear, I openly declare myself in my fight against prostate cancer."

The WWE Hall of Famer, who suffered a stroke in 2002, later went on to assure his fans he will give it his all in battling the fight he now faces.

"I make a solemn vow to all of those that once believed in me, the dead and the living, that I will wage my fearsome fight against cancer with one shield and one sword carrying my determination and my fury for life, emboldened by all the love that's kept me going this long already," he wrote.

According to ESPN, over his long and storied career, Hart won the world heavyweight championship five times in the WWF and twice more with WCW. In addition, he won the WWE U.S. heavyweight title five times.

A member of the famed Hart wrestling family from Canada, Bret retired in 1999 after suffering a concussion. His father, Stu Hart, wrestled professionally before gaining acclaim as a trainer and his brother Owen also had a long and distinguished career until he died in 1999 after falling from an apparatus as he was being lowered into the ring from the ceiling of Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri.

In waging his battle, Hart has vowed to be example and inspiration to men everywhere who find themselves facing similar circumstances.

While in the WWE, Hart also once teamed with Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart to win the tag-team title.
