Android M, 6.0 Marshmallow Update Release Date: Nvidia Shield Tablet Upgrade Rolling Out
While Android 6.0 Marshmallow is just beginning to roll out to some of the most popular OEM smartphones made by Samsung, HTC, LG, and others, Nvidia's critically praised gaming tablet has already gotten its own rollout of Android M.
The Nvidia Shield gaming tablet is now following the Nvidia Shield K1 tablet in getting a full upgrade to Google's latest version of its mobile operating system, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Shield K1 got an upgrade to Android M late last year, according to Android Police, and now just into 2016, the original Nvidia Shield tablet has hit its update release date as well.
The update comes in the form of Nvidia's "Update 4.0," which includes a lot of other patches, bug fixes and upgrades outside of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, which is also included in the firmware package, of course.
Nvidia has updated the Shield camera, including improved burst photo functionality and real-time HD Image Effects, according to the company's changelog.
Other features coming with Android M include improved, granular app permissions, the power saving "Doze" mode, Google Now on Tap, new personalized home and lock screens with new Nvidia wallpapers, personalized options for the Quick Settings panel, improved WiFi connectivity, and the update to Android 6.0 Security Patch Level January 2016. Android M updates to Material Design elements are also included in Nvidia's 4.0 upgrade.
There's also a new integration option for MicroSD storage. It can auto-manage your storage expansion while integrating it into system's main internal storage -- but Nvidia cautions users if they opt for the integrated "internal storage" mode, the update will wipe all data from the SD card. Be sure to back it up before downloading the system upgrade just in case.
The update was announced on Feb. 1, 2016, and is reportedly first rolling out to WiFi only versions of the Nvidia Shield tablet, followed by LTE versions.
