Premier League News: Wayne Rooney Backs Manchester United Interim Manager Ryan Giggs After 4-0 Win In Debut
Wayne Rooney believes that Manchester United should consider naming Ryan Giggs as the next manager after the club scored a 4-0 win over Norwich on Saturday.
Giggs made a good account of himself in his managerial debut, and Rooney, who scored two goals in the lopsided match, told reporters that the 40-year-old Manchester United legend has the qualities to become manager on a permanent basis.
"I think Giggsy has got all of the credentials to be a manager but that's down to the board," Rooney told Sky Sports.
The veteran striker admitted that playing for Giggs, who has been his teammate at the Old Trafford since 2004, felt strange, but Rooney admitted that he was also impressed with how the former Manchester United winger handled himself in his debut.
"It's strange -- I've played with him for the last 10 years," Rooney said. "Giggsy's come in and we all know Giggsy is a really experienced player. He's been part of the coaching staff for the season. He's built to be a manager, as a team we can see that. We can see that by how he's handled himself since he took over so it was fantastic to go out there and get the win for him."
However, Giggs might not get the job on a permanent basis as ESPN reported on Sunday that Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal will likely be named as Manchester United's next manager.
The club denied that a deal has been struck, which would put van Gaal at the helm after the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, but sources revealed that there has been significant discussion between Manchester United and the 62-year-old coach.
Van Gaal will reportedly accept the job after the World Cup, with sources also indicating that Giggs will slide down as one of his assistants along with Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane and former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert.
"Van Gaal would be absolutely the first pick of any club, especially top teams everywhere in the world. He likes to let young players make their debut if ready for it," Kluivert said of van Gaal, who previously handled Ajax, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
