Jack Ramsay, Hall of Fame NBA Coach, Passes Away At 89
Former NBA coach Jack Ramsay has passed away after his long fight with cancer according to multiple sources at the age of 89.
Most basketball fans remember Jack Ramsay as the coach who led the Portland Trail Blazers to a victory in the 1977 NBA Championship. Still, to this day, it remains the only championship in Trail Blazers franchise history.
Ramsay began coaching in the NBA in 1968 when he took over the Philadelphia 76ers. He had previously helped the team win a championship as a general manager. As the 76ers coach, Ramsay put together a 174-154 record in four seasons with the team. Ramsay would later coach the Buffalo Braves for four seasons, turning around a terrible team and make the playoffs three times.
In 1976, Ramsay took over as head coach for the Trail Blazers. The Trail Blazers had not had a single winning season in their franchise history, and the previous season, they were 37-45. That year, Ramsay would coach the Trail Blazers to an impressive 49-33 record, good enough for a No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. In the playoffs, Portland would dispose of the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets and defeat Ramsay's old team in the NBA Finals, the 76ers.
Despite the 76ers winning the first two games of the series, the Trail Blazers won the next four to win the championship.
Ramsay would coach the Blazers over the next nine seasons. In those 10 combined seasons with the Trail Blazers, Ramsay made the playoffs nine times with the club. His final season with the team came in 1985, at the age of 60. The Blazers wanted a change of scenery and Ramsay went to coach the Indiana Pacers. His time in Indiana wasn't very pleasant and didn't last long. Today, Ramsay stands eighth all time in career wins by a head coach with 864 victories, even ahead of Chuck Daly.
After retiring from coaching, Ramsay would contribute his time to broadcasting numerous NBA games. Because of his coaching career, Ramsay was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.
Ramsay's former team, the Portland Trail Blazers, have only made the playoffs four times in the last 11 seasons. They haven't even made it back to the NBA Finals since Ramsay left the team. However, they are currently attempting to make it to the second round of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets.
