Kate del Castillo Files Injunction Seeking to Block Any Arrest Related to 'El Chapo' Probe
Kate del Castillo has filed a legal injunction to block the Mexican government from being able to arrest her in its widening probe of her relationship with imprisoned drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán.
CBS News reports a judge has since instructed attorneys for the Mexican actress to more clearly specify the grounds on which they're seeking their action.
Several media outlets have reported it was del Castillo who brokered the October meeting between Guzmán and Academy Award winning actor Sean Penn, during which he conducted an interview with the Sinaloa cartel crime boss for a Rolling Stone profile.
Not long after the interview, a then fugitive Guzmán was recaptured by Mexican authorities. They openly insist his ongoing correspondence with del Castillo and others aided their search and capture, some six months after his escape from a maximum security prison.
Earlier this month, Mexico's attorney general said officials are now investigating possible money laundering involving Guzmán and a tequila business owned by del Castillo.
Meanwhile, relations between del Castillo and Penn also appear to have turned frosty, with the actress now insisting she was double-crossed by Penn in their meeting with "El Chapo."
TMZ reports she now claims he only told her he was working on the Rolling Stone piece while they were meeting with Guzmán. Word is she now fears the entire situation could have put her in grave danger by revealing her connection with Guzmán to the world.
Sources close to Penn, however, dispute those allegations, insisting that she knew about the Rolling Stone piece from the very beginning and ultimately even helped to fact-check the article.
Guzmán is now being held in Mexico and faces possible extradition here to the U.S., where CNN reports he has previously been indicted on an array of federal drug smuggling charges.
