Grammy 2016 Winners: Ricky Martin and Pitbull Among Latinos to Win Grammys
While Latinos were not nominated for the big prize at the Grammys, numerous Latinos had reasons to celebrate.
Among the winners included Antonio Sanchez who took home the award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the Oscar winning film "Birdman." The composer was not expected to win as he was up against Alexandre Desplat and Hans Zimmer.
Meanwhile Ricky Martin won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. He won for his work on "A Quien Quiera Escuchar (Deluxe Edition)." It was Martin's second Grammy as he won Best Latin Pop performance for his 1999 hit "Vuelve. The singer had previously been nominated in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
Pitbull also won hit first Grammy for his for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alnertaive Album for his work on "Dale."
Los Tigres del Norte took home the Best Regional Mexican Music Album award for "Realidades - Deluxe Edition." It was the seventh win for the Mexican band which is among the most popular Mexican groups.
Rubén Blades With Roberto Delgado & Orchestra won for their Tropical Album "Son De Panamá." The duo beat out Juan Luis Guerra, who had recently won the Latin Grammy in the category of Best Tropical Latin Album.
Latinos also had luck in the Best Musical Theater Album category as Lin-Manuel Miranda for his Broadway hit "Hamilton." The musical has been a big hit throughout its run and should be in conversation for the Tony's this upcoming year.
Eliane Elias won Best Latin Jazz album for her work on "Made in Brazil." In the classical categories, Argentine mezzo soprano Isabel Leonard shared her second Grammy with Seiji Ozawa for her work on "Ravel's L'Enfant Et Les Sortilèges; Shéhérazade." The recording won Best Opera Recording beating fellow Latino Roland Villazon for his work on "Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail."
Celia Cruz also received a posthumous Lifetime Acheivement Award while numerous Latinos like Joan Sebastian were recognized in the in memoriam section.
Finally, Pitbull concluded the ceremony in a memorable performance that also included Sofia Vergara dancing to one of his songs.
Taylor Swift made history becoming the first woman to win Best Album of the year for the second time. Meanwhile Bruno Mars won the Best Record of the Year for "Uptown Funk" and Ed Sheeran won the Best Song of the Year award.
