Why Cristiano Ronaldo Walked Out Amid a Press Conference
Real Madrid star player Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly walked out of a press conference recently, irked by curious question which apparently offended the 31-year-old star, per BBC.
The Portuguese forward was at a news conference before the first leg of Real’s Champions League last-16 when someone asked him about his record away from Bernabeu. This season, Ronaldo has made 32 goals but has curiously not delivered during recent away matches.
"Who else has scored more goals away from home than me since I arrived in Spain?" "Name one player who has scored more than me. No answer? OK. Thank you," said the all-time top scorer in the Champions League before walking out of the press conference as quoted by BBC.
So far, Ronaldo has scored 11 of his goals from away games but has not been able to score in their last four outings. However, the Portugues hotshot understood where the doubts were coming from.
"It's understandable that people have doubts," said Ronaldo. "It's like with a son when you give him everything and then when you take it away, he cries.”
Prior to that, Ronaldo was thrown another interesting question on why he did not have close ties with his teammates. Unlike Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, Ronaldo is not close with teammates Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.
On his end, Ronaldo feels that players don’t really need to be best friends away from football to function effectively as a unit. He cites an instance when he was still with Manchester United, per ESPN FC.
"When I was at Manchester United, we won the Champions League and there were some players I would only say 'hi' to, like [Ryan] Giggs, [Paul] Scholes or [Rio] Ferdinand," said Ronaldo.
"It's not necessary to go out eating with Bale, what matters is when you are on the field. What happens off it doesn't count, it matters that we are a team on it," he added.
Whether that stands true or not should be known soon as Real Madrid buckles down to work. He singles out the desire of the team to win, although he admits that achieving that will not be easy.
Real Madrid will face Roma Wednesday, which will also see Zinedine Zidane in his first Champions League game as a coach.
“We all know what this competition represents for Real Madrid, we’re fine physically and we’ll do everything to go through,” said Zidane via Football-Italia.net.
