Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards Unlikely Destinations for Kevin Durant in Free Agency
Two teams who plan to pitch Kevin Durant may want to save themselves the trouble since both cannot likely provide what the one-time NBA MVP wants -– an instant shot at the NBA title.
Though the 2015-2016 NBA season has yet to conclude, the chatter on the upcoming free agency has already started. As expected, Kevin Durant is the center of it all. He is the biggest name available, but only if any team can assure him of an NBA ring.
Such is not really surprising. Durant is expected to be worth a lot of money, but the NBA championship whittles down the teams who can give him that. In fact, the Thunder should be at the top of his list, considering that his current team can make a run at it if only they can put the pieces together.
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Wizards are two teams expected to make wild pitches. However, with their current state, they are likely to fall short unless they can come up with a massive build-up of key players that will make Durant the final piece.
So if the NBA title is one that can lure Durant out of Oklahoma City, the likes of the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers or even the San Antonio Spurs are his best bets.
Of the mix, the Warriors have the best percentage of snagging his first NBA title though one has to wonder how the "Dubs" will tinker around with their roster.
Adding the 27-year-old forward should be perfect, but the budget and salary structure will take a big hit. Some key players like Brandon Rush, Andre Iguodala or Harrison Barnes may have to be let go, but that remains to be seen.
The same is true for other teams in order to go all the way to the NBA finals this season. The Cavs could unload their players for Durant. This is the same for Miami Heat, who are questionable with Chris Bosh suffering from health issues again.
Nothing has been confirmed, but Bosh’s issue is not a good sign. Will it eventually hamper his career?
With the Cavs, Durant gets to pair up with LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, unless Cleveland end up unloading Love to make room for Durant.
In Miami, one can just imagine how he and Hassan Whiteside comprise a vaunted frontline with Goran Dragic and a healthy Dwyane Wade.
Right now, the safest bet is for him to stay with the Thunder. The Warriors are a top option, but it will all depend on what Durant eventually settles on the table.
