Does Floyd Mayweather Jr. Stand a Chance Against Gennady Golovkin?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been known to brim with confidence, even if that includes possibly facing a dangerous opponent in Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin.
While everything seems to be a fantasy, such has not fazed Mayweather on his chances against Triple G. Even if the fight were to be made at 160 lbs., the undefeated American believes that the Kazakh boxer would be “easy work."
The question was brought up to Mayweather recently, as it was obvious that the 49-0 boxer will struggle to reach that weight requirement.
"I can barely make 147, so how am I gonna fight at 160?" said Mayweather. "Triple G, not being disrespectful, but he's straight up and down, no special effects. That's easy work. With the [Manny] Pacquiao fight, you know, 10 rounds to two, that was a blowout."
Though Mayweather has retired and has continued to stress that he is not interested in returning to the boxing ring any time soon, there are those who believe he eventually will. But if he does return at some point in the future, seeing him face off against Golovkin is a pretty remote possibility.
One reason why the fight is bleak is money. Golovkin has yet to prove himself as a pay-per-view draw and that's why some big named boxers have avoided a collision with Triple G. That and, of course, the fact that he is dangerous.
The undefeated Kazakh boxer actually pitched in his name last year, saying he would drop down to light middleweight to face the 38-year-old boxer. Mayweather will be 39 years old on Feb. 24.
Also, it seems unlikely that Mayweather would really want any part of Golovkin. He has finished most of his opponents via his powerful punches, which even Mayweather may find hard to thwart.
Aside from that, there is Manny Pacquiao. Though he won the May 2015 fight, it still stands as the logical fight for Mayweather to consider if he does don his gloves one last time.
The money is there and has all the makings of another rich payday, though not as lucrative as their first meeting. Breaking Rocky Marciano’s record and against someone who is equally popular in the sports is the ultimate end to his career.
Many feel that such is running in Mayweather’s mind. It may not be abuzz right now but it could all change after Pacquiao’s farewell match with Timothy Bradley Jr.
As far as Golovkin is concerned, it would have been one for the books. Unfortunately, Mayweather is not expected to take the risk against a young and rising power fighter in Triple G.
