When it comes to history and culture, the Latin America region can hold its own against the world's greatest. Some of man's finest and most significant historical and archaeological feats were accomplished in these lands. The opportunity to get a glimpse of these still exists for travelers making the trip. Here are five of the many important heritage sites in Latin America.
Tiwanaku (Bolivia)
The ancient city of Tiwanaku is the home of the pre-Columbian culture that lived in Bolivia from 1600 B.C. to 1200 A.D. There are still plenty of sights to explore in the destination. These include an awe-inspiring stone-carved Sun Gate and an irrigation system that let the people farm in the barren land. Massive monoliths also surround the mysterious city.
Tikal National Park (Guatemala)
Deep in the lush beauty of the jungle is Tikal, one of the major sites of Mayan civilization. Home of Mayans from 6th century B.C. to 10th century A.D., the park is a historical gem against the stunning Maya Forest backdrop. The collection of temples, palaces and other structures are everywhere in this Guatemalan destination.
Machu Picchu (Peru)
It's impossible to make any kind of travel list in the region without including Machu Picchu. It remains to be one of the most significant historical sites to visit. The citadel was built in the 15th century and was a hidden city until American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered it in 1911. The remote location of Machu Picchu helped it retain a sacred atmosphere. Thousands of travelers embark on a pilgrimage to the citadel annually.
Other notable heritage sites in Peru are the Inca city Cuzco, pre-Columbian city Chan Chan, architectural and cultural center Cercado de Lima, the eerie Nazca Lines and ancient architectural wonder Caral, among others.
Cartagena (Colombia)
The walled city of Cartagena is a fascinating "living outdoor museum" for the country's Spanish colonial history. The immaculately preserved site is teeming with sights like old Spanish architecture and horse-drawn carriages, making tourists believe they've been transported centuries back. The free attractions are also a huge draw for travelers who want a place to explore without shelling out too much.
Historic Centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco (Mexico)
It's difficult to choose among Mexico's heritage sites, but the Historic Centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco is one of the must-visit attractions in the country. Mexico City boasts five Aztec temples within the metro, as well as well-preserved buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
