Rafael dos Anjos Counted out of UFC 196 Following Foot Injury
Conor McGregor will have to wait to make UFC history following the sudden withdrawal of UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos due to a broken foot.
McGregor and dos Anjos were originally pitted to face off next weekend for UFC 196 with the lightweight title on the line. It was a highly anticipated showdown with all eyes on "The Notorious," who was aiming to become the first UFC fighter to hold two titles in two separate divisions.
Though dos Anjos is not required to undergo surgery for his foot, his manager Ali Abdelaziz reveals that it will take six to eight weeks for it to heal. This is the second time in the last seven months that a UFC champion has withdrawn from a title fight with the Irishman.
Fellow Brazilian Jose Aldo also withdrew from his title defense against Conor McGregor for UFC 189 following a rib injury he sustained during training. Chad Mendes replaced Aldo but McGregor still came out winning that one.
There were many names mentioned to possibly replace dos Anjos when word of his withdrawal came out. That list includes Aldo, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis and Nate Diaz.
In the end, the UFC announced that Diaz will be taking the spot of dos Anjos and the fight will instead be a welterweight card. UFC 196 takes place on March 5 in Las Vegas.
Though not a title contender, Diaz is considered one of the popular fighters in the weight class. Diaz saw action last December, where he won over Michael Johnson at Fox UFC Fight Night. However, prior to the fight, Diaz already sounded off for a possible fight with the brash-talking Irishman.
“Conor McGregor, you’re taking everything I work for, [expletive]. I’m gonna fight your [expletive] ass. You know what the real fight -- the real money fight -- is: Me. Not these clowns that you already punked at the press conference.” said Diaz back in December.
McGregor responded with his own verbal jabs at Diaz, which technically made the upcoming tiff a grudge match to settle their differences.
Following the UFC’s official announcement on Diaz, the 30-year-old mixed martial artist tweeted the following.
Though it isn’t for the lightweight title, the match involving Diaz could end up being a blessing in disguise for McGregor. It will see how well the Irishman has adjusted in the heavier weight class.
