Canelo "Saul" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin should be primed for a showdown after the two boxers take on separate rivals. However, there are some who feel that the fight may not occur at all.

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach is the latest to air his opinion on the matter. According to Roach, there is no sense for Golden Boy Promotions to line up Alvarez against a dangerous and knockout-conscious Golovkin.

“I don’t think that fight will happen, why would they take a chance with their best selling guy? In my opinion I don’t think that fight will happen because it makes no sense,” said Roach in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing.

Roach's views do come with a point, and that doesn’t even include the other issues on the table, which are yet to be resolved. One particular issue has to do with the 155 lbs. catchweight stipulation that Alvarez and company have repeatedly emphasized.

Alvarez justified the stipulation, saying that he is done giving away advantages to his opponents. A clear example was when he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013. The Mexican had to give in the 152 lbs. catchweight set, and such was something Alvarez was unable to adapt.

Golovkin is obviously bigger and wants the fight to take place at the official 160 lbs. weight for the middleweight division.

“At this moment, my body isn’t ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I’ll be ready for 160,” said Alvarez before he fought Miguel Cotto back in November.

With that in mind, Alvarez will be left with no choice but to vacate the WBC middleweight title, which means that Golovkin wins it by default.

Though it was earlier believed that the WBC would not recognize the catchweight stipulation made by Alvarez, a recent statement from WBC boss Mauricio Sulaiman may have changed the tide.

"The fight is for the WBC middleweight championship and if there is any weight agreement, such is a private contract between the fighters,” said Sulaiman.

He added something interesting as well, which could draw a reaction from the Kazakh’s camp.

"The division limit is 160, so any weight lower than that is considered as official and within the rules,” Sulaiman said.

Sulaiman’s statements were made in connection with the upcoming fight between Alvarez and Khan. It will be interesting if he adopts the same stance when it's time to fix the blockbuster bout in the fall.
