Neymar Gets Fresh 5-Year Deal With Barcelona
For teams who have plans to dangle Barcelona’s Neymar any contract with ridiculous figures, it may be best to hold that back for now. Apparently the rising Brazilian striker has already signed a new pact with Barca. The reported deal will keep him at Camp Nou until 2021.
ESPN Brasil reported that the contract has been signed back in December when the ballclub was in Japan during the Club World Cup. Any formal announcement on the deal was purposely held back due to the tax evasion case that the 24-year-old was facing.
The professional footballer is currently dealing with cases under the Brazil and Spanish courts.
The said contract takes effect this summer despite the fact that his previous deal will expire in 2018. Teams like Real Madrid were seriously considering on making a move on Neymar. However, any pitches had to wait pending the outcome of the tax evasion case he was facing.
Though the figures were withheld, Neymar would reportedly become the second highest-paid player behind resident star Lionel Messi.
Both spearhead Barca’s vaunted "Trident" along with Luis Suarez, who recently vied for the top honor of being the world’s best at the 2015 Ballon d’Or. Messi won the plum over rival Cristiano Ronaldo with Neymar finishing third.
Despite falling short of that honor, many believe that Neymar will eventually be feted as the world’s best male soccer player. A lot of that is tied up to his performance last year when he helped the club in the Treble.
But the road towards that could be bumpy as the Brazilian player needs to settle the tax evasion issues shrouding his illustrious career.
Right now, Neymar is facing investigations in Spain involving discrepancies in the deal, which saw him transfer from Santos to Barcelona back in 2013. The initial figures showed a supposed $74 million price paid by Barcelona at the time though an investment group alleges that the real figures are about $90 million.
Over in Brazil, Neymar saw his assets frozen after being charged of tax evasion worthy about $16 million covering 2011 to 2013 when the Brazilian was still playing for Santos.
On the field, one of the teams that were keen on pitching for Neymar was Real Madrid. In fact, there were rumors that both sides met at the 2015 Ballon d’Or though it would have been an awkward to talk about a possible deal.
