Lena Dunham Surprised at her Own Weight Loss?:'Girls' Star Apologizes to Magazine After Photoshop Accusation
Lena Dunham initially claimed that her cover photo on a Spanish magazine has been significantly edited.
Mad Photoshop
According to The Guardian, Dunham, star of the HBO series “Girls,” alleged that her photo, which has been arranged to pay tribute to the British model Twiggy, has been airbrushed and did not show her true body. The cover photo was featured in the latest issue of Tentaciones (Temptations), a monthly supplement with El Pais, the top-circulation newspaper in Spain. The image was captured by Colombian photographer Ruven Afanador and initially came out in Entertainment Weekly in 2012.
Dunham resorted to Instagram to appeal to the publication. She has 2.4 million Instagram followers.
Tentaciones denied that they made changes to the photo. The magazine provided an open letter to the actress, saying that they do not use Photoshop or other digital tools to alter the physical appearance of the stars in their covers as well as the other features that are found in their content.Tentaciones said that they only cropped Dunham’s image so that it adapts to the format of their front page.
Criticizing Heavy Photo Editing
CNN reported that since the publication clarified their stance, Dunham has been mellower in criticizing El Pais. However, she is still adamant against the usual approach by magazines in adjusting photos in unrealistic ways to appeal more to women, giving readers impractical views about their bodies.
Dunham wrote on Instagram that perhaps, the approach is “getting sick” and what should matter more is the fact that the body functions instead of it merely being slim and milky white. She added that she wants something different now, saying that she plans to reach the core of the issue in a bigger way.
In the past few years, many celebrities and models have been criticizing the heavy use of photo editing software that significantly changes their appearance to absurd measures at times.
