In a shocking turn of events, the almost immortal, adamantium-clawed X-Man is about to meet his death this fall, thanks to Marvel and its writers.

Marvel has been teasing Wolverine's death for months, but now it's official. In September, "Death of Wolverine" will debut, and it will explore Wolverine's death in a four-part mini-series.

It may have been 40 years since the Wolverine comic book character made his first appearance in the very last page of The Incredible Hulk Issue #180, but Wolverine is over a century old; during that time, he has been a soldier, a samurai, a superhero, an X-Man, an Avenger, an amnesiac victim of horrific scientific experiments, a renegade and a teacher, as Entertainment Weekly reported.

Wolverine's looming loss of his healing and regenerative powers began when he contracted a unique virus that robbed him of his mutant abilities in a past issue, Newsarama reported.

The idea to kill off one of the most iconic characters in comic books emerged out of Marvel's semi-annual creative retreat, a place where Marvel writers and editors come together to discuss major projects.

Michael Marts, an executive editor at Marvel overseeing the project, says that Wolverine has always come out on top after battling some fatal events. "Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who's been around for a hundred years?" Marts said, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Steve McNiven, an artist for "Civil War" and "Old Man Logan," and Charles Soule, one of the most in demand comic book writers, will be working on the project, Newsarama reported.

Soule says that the series is meant to be, in part, a retrospective for the character and his audience. Soule explains that Wolverine will be reflecting on his life, while reflecting on his own death as well, "We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, we're focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential Wolverine," Soule added.

Soule also says that this will be Wolverine's non-stop battle to the finish line.

More will be revealed about the Wolverine's death at an C2E2 event in Chicago.
