Presidential Race 2016: Trump Supporters Like His Style More Than His Politics
Although the issue of immigration reform has dominated the Republican presidential primary race and is being used as a central part of GOP frontrunner Donald Trump's campaign, it turns out that most GOP voters don't see it as an important issue.
Since the launch of his presidential bid last June, Trump has centered his campaign around fearmongering and inflammatory anti-immigrant remarks. His discriminatory comments and policy ideas seems to have helped him gain traction in the polls and a strong lead in the primary race. However, despite his relentless focus on immigration reform, exit polls reveal that Republican voters ranked immigration last when asked to list the "most important" issues facing the country, reports NBC News. Instead, the economy, unemployment and federal spending were listed as their most pressing concerns.
Throughout the race, the billionaire businessman and many of the GOP candidates have also been adamant about preventing undocumented workers from gaining citizenship in the U.S. However, about half of the Republicans surveyed said that they would support giving undocumented immigrants the opportunity to apply for legal status in the U.S. In many cases, a large portion of those backing Trump also support the idea of "amnesty" for undocumented workers.
Ironically, Trump's popularity seems to grow when and after he makes discriminatory comments and outlandish policy proposals like building a giant wall at the souther border, deporting all 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S., and putting a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S.. Although voters also seem to love his brash bravado and style, polls show that they don't care much about the context in his speeches. They care less about immigraiton in comparison to the economy, unemployment rate and terrorism.
