Lena Dunham was recently admitted into a hospital to have surgery for a ruptured ovarian cyst. The “Girls” star has been very open about her struggle with endometriosis.

Dunham Confined in an Undisclosed Hospital

Cindi Berger, Dunham’s spokeswoman, said on March 5 that the actress has been very public with her personal bouts with endometriosis. That same morning, Dunham’s ovarian cyst ruptured so she was taken to an undisclosed hospital to undergo surgery. She thanked everyone for understanding and hoped that they respect her privacy.

In February 2016, Dunham posted on Facebook that she would skip the press for Season 5 of “Girls” due to her condition. She explained that endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects about one in 10 women.

The actress has been sharing her experience in the past weeks, posting photos of herself going to the gynecologist and saying that talking about her condition has been very helpful in several ways. Dunham has resorted to social media to talk about endometriosis and how she copes on a daily basis.

“I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it’s time to rest,” Dunham wrote on Instagram.

She also shared her excitement for the return of “Girls” on HBO. She added that it was difficult not to do press as she dealt with her condition, since all she wanted was to make Season 6 the best one yet. She acknowledged the people who were there throughout to offer support. Dunham ended the post by wishing everyone good health and happiness.

About Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that lines the uterus is located outside the uterus. For some women, the pain caused by endometriosis can be chronic and pose a number of issues. The pain can get worse over time and other symptoms like diarrhea, bowel problems and cramping can also happen.

It is still uncertain how long Dunham will be staying in the hospital. More updates and details on her surgery are expected soon.

“Girls” Season 5 premiered on Feb. 21. The series was already confirmed to have a sixth and last season, set to air in 2017. The comedy drama was created by Dunham and follows the lives of four young women residing in New York City. The main features of the key character were actually inspired by Dunham’s own life.
