Samsung vs. Apple: Galaxy S4 Maker to Pay iPhone 5S Company $119.6 Million for Copyright Infringement
It's no secret that competitors Apple and Samsung are in a never ending battle of trying to "one up" one another.
In the latest battle between Apple and Samsung, it was Apple that accused Samsung of infringing several patents.
According to CNET, Apple's original suit claimed that Samsung "had systematically copied Apple's innovative technology and products, features, and designs, and has deluged markets with infringing devices in an effort to usurp market share from Apple."
And that was just the beginning.
Samsung later sued Apple for "trying to hurt competition by targeting it for litigation" and infringing some of its patents, CNET reports.
The case between the two mega companies kicked off on March 31, 2014 and ended this on Monday, May 5 with the jury deciding that both parties were guilty of patent infringement.
Vanity Fair reports that though Apple sought $2.2 billion in damages from Samsung, it only received $119.6 million. Samsung on the other hand was awarded even less, resulting in a small total of $158,400 in damages.
The jury found that Samsung had infringed on a patent known as "data tapping" that gives the user the ability to dial a phone number included in an email or text message simply by touching it.
Some of Samsung's devices were also determined to have infringed on Apple's "slide-to-unlock" patent that allows users access to their device by sliding their finger across the device's screen.
On the other spectrum, Apple infringed Samsung's photo-organization technology patent.
This isn't the first time that Apple and Samsung have gone head to head in a legal case. In 2012, Apple sued Samsung for copying the look and feel of its iPhones and iPads and was later awarded $930 million.
Now that both trials have ended, Apple has a combined total of more than $1 billion of awarded money that it has received from Samsung.
Better luck next time, Samsung.
