Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'Hamilton' Breaks Tony Nominations Record Including Best Musical
The Broadway hit "Hamilton" has been nominated for 16 awards including Best Musical. The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 3. Coming into the nominations it was suspected that "Hamilton" would be nominated for multiple awards as it has become a phenomena.
The Phenomena
The musical broke the record for the most nominated musical ever at the Tony's and out of those nominations, three went to creator and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda. "Hamilton" also saw six of its stars also nominated, including "Frozen" star Jonathon Groff.
"Hamilton" surpassed two other shows as the most nominated musical of all time. Previously "The Producers (2001)" and "Billy Elliot (2009)" were the record holders with 15 nominations.
It will be interesting to see if the show can break the winning record, which is currently 12 wins, and the show to break that record was "The Producers."
Before the Tony awards, the play was already a success as it made $30 million before even opening on Broadway and scored one of the best reviews for a musical in years. It was also first seen off Broadway in a production was sold out and also acclaimed. It is now set to premiere in Chicago later in September and in London in 2017.
The musical also won the Grammy and a number from the show was performed at the Grammys. This was a first as musicals are usually left out of the televised show. The musical also won Drama Desk awards and was also featured in Billboard Top 25 albums of the year as well as Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums of 2015.
Lin-Manual Miranda
But the musical's success is partly due to the genius of its creator, Miranda, who's is also known for his work on "In the Heights." For his work on "Hamilton," Miranda has already received the Pultizer Prize as well as the MacArthur "Genius" Award.
His video with President Barack Obama also went viral when Mrianda was invited to the white house and did a freestyle rap.
The 70th Tony Awards will be held on June 12, from the Beacon Theatre.
