The jokes and memes can end as Hoenn has finally been confirmed.

The Pokémon Company International revealed the latest remakes of its franchise will be for the long-anticipated third generation "Pokémon Ruby Version" and "Pokémon Sapphire Version." The original games were released in North America on March 19, 2003, about five months after its initial launch in Japan during November 2002 for the Game Boy Advance system.

The remakes, known as "Pokémon Omega Ruby" and "Pokémon Alpha Sapphire," will follow the footsteps of the recently released "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" in terms of being exclusive games for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS systems.

The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo's announcement of the third-generation remakes have left fans with questions about potential features of the games. For one example, the original games were located in the Hoenn region, but the announcement of the new games mentioned a "spectacular new world."

Could the remakes include an entirely new land or region? Unlikely. But the remakes could feature new routes or towns as seen with "Pokémon HeartGold Version" and "Pokémon SoulSilver Version" when the Safari Zone was moved into western Johto and Sinjoh Ruins in the north. A new southern region was featured in "Pokémon FireRed Version" and "Pokémon LeafGreen Version" in 2004, remakes of the original Pokémon games, with the archipelago Sevii Islands.

Additional unknowns about the new games are the roles of Mega Evolution and connections to the new Kalos region, both introduced on "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y." Several Pokémon introduced in the original third-generation games have Pokémon capable on Mega Evolution such as Absol, Banette, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Manectric, Mawile, Medicham. Dual Steel-and-Rock type Aggron can also Mega Evolve and is one of the six Pokémon under Hoenn Pokémon League Champion Steven. It is unknown if Steven or Wallace is the Pokémon League Champion in the remakes, but regardless, each have a Pokémon that can Mega Evolve -- as Wallace owns a Gyarados.

A trailer for the new games, which falls in the sixth-generation series, was released on YouTube. The trailer has garnered nearly two million views within 48 hours of its upload date. The trailer does not include gameplay footage, but rather simply teases with text and the cover art of the two games.

The original "Pokémon Ruby Version" and "Pokémon Sapphire Version" introduced 135 new Pokémon, which brought the total Pokémon count to 386. By 2014, the Pokémon franchise includes 719 Pokémon.

It is still unknown, but likely, for "Pokémon Omega Ruby" and "Pokémon Alpha Sapphire" to launch worldwide on the same day that "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" did. But the November release date has not been specified, nor do we know if midnight launches are planned.

The originals were the best-selling games ever for the Game Boy Advance, with 16 million units sold worldwide, which at the time was more than the 14 million sold for "Pokémon Gold Version" and "Pokémon Silver Version" but considerably down from "Pokémon Red Version" and "Pokémon Blue Version's" 27 million sold.
