Summer Opera Schedule 2016: Where Will Placido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Florez & Others Be Singing?
As the summer season begins, the opera world enters its festival season with many great singers participating in many new productions or in star studded concerts. The following is a look at some of the most popular singers and their summer schedule.
Placido Domingo continues to be one of the wonders of the world and this summer he continues his hectic schedule portraying the role of Nabucco in Verdi's "Nabucco" at the Royal Opera House. He follows that run with performances of Verdi's "La Traviata" in Paris and returns to the Teatro alla Scala di Milan and Teatro Real for "Simon Boccanegra" and "I Due Foscari." He concludes the summer at Salzburg in concert performances of Massenet's "Thais" with Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva.
Yoncheva, who is quickly becoming a huge star, also joins Domingo in "La Traviata" in Paris and will also sing the opera in Munich. The soprano will also sing concert performances with Polish tenor Piotr Beczala and will also take on Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater." Yoncheva will also make her role debut in Massenet's "Iris" and will also sing the role of Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme."
Elina Garanca will take the summer off from the opera stage and instead will dedicate herself to multiple concert performances with her husband, conductor Karel Marek Chichon. Garanca will sing all over Europe in Austria, Macedonia, Germany and Finland. She will conclude her summer tour in a star studded gala performance at Baden Baden with Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros and Bryn Terfel.
Jonas Kaufmann will continue singing Wagner's "Meistersingers" in Munich before traveling to Vienna and Paris for concert performances of Mahler's "Das Lied Von de Erde." He will then return to Munich for performances of Puccini's "Tosca" and will sing a concert performance of Wagner's "Die Walkure" with Eva-Maria Westbroek, Rene Pape and Evelyn Herlitizius. The tenor concludes his summer season with recital performances and the star studded gala in Baden Baden.
Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez launches his summer season at the Red Ribbon Concert before traveling to Spain, Switzerland and Italy for concert performances. He returns to Pesaro where he will be honored with a gala celebrating his 20th anniversary with the festival and he will also sing a new production of Rossini's "la Donna del Lago." The tenor concludes his summer making his role debut in Noclai's "Il Templario" with Joyce Didonato.
Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon starts his summer season in Martinu's "Juliette" in Berlin and continues his foray into modern music with Srnka's "South Pole" in Munich where he will also sing Verdi's "La Traviata." His summer season concludes with concert performances in Salzburg and his role debut in Monetverdi's "L'Orfeo."
Diana Damrau returns to Orange for performances of Verdi's "La Traviata." The German soprano will also return to Madrid for a series of performances of Bellini's "I Puritani" with Javier Camarena and concludes her summer tour in concert performances.
Kristine Opolais returns to Munich for festival performances of Boito's "Mefistofele." The Latvian soprano will return to the U.S. for a concert performance of Verdi's "Aida" at Tanglewood. The concert will be conducted by her husband Andris Nelsons and will also star Violetta Urmana and Andrea Care.
Anna Netrebko begins her summer season at the Mariinsky theatre where she sings the role of Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin" alongside Nadja Michael and conducted by Valery Gergiev. The soprano then returns to Vienna for a series of performances of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut," a role she will also perform at the Salzburg. The Russian soprano will also return to Berlin for a run of Verdi's "Il Trovatore."
