Mexican Businessman Carlos Slim Launches Free Educational Website, Seeks to Donate Secondhand Phones
Mexican businessman and philanthropist Carlos Slim is using his platform to help people educate themselves for free.
On June 15, Slim announced his latest project, called Aprende.org. Aprende, which means learn in Spanish, is a website that provides educational materials that would otherwise need to be paid for.
If you have internet you can easily access the website and learn about a variety of subjects, including culture and health. The website offers materials that range from elementary school to college.
There won't be data charges if the website is accessed through Slim's telecom company America Movil.
On June 15, he also announced that he is seeking secondhand smart phones to then donate them to public schools.
Those who donate their used smart phones will receive a small compensation but the bigger prize will be knowing that public school kids will have access to the free educational material Slim is offering.
Slim's initiatives, which is available in 147 countries, could be beneficial to Mexico's public education system, which is one of the lowest ranked among the members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
