Hillary Clinton has built a commanding seven-point lead over Donald Trump in a new national poll that pits the two presumptive presidential nominees head to head.

A Monmouth University poll now finds Clinton leading Trump 47 percent to 40 percent, with just six percent of voters insisting they remain undecided.

Almost 60 Percent of Voters Keen on Stopping Trump 

Perhaps even more troubling to Trump and Republicans, nearly 60 percent of voters indicate they view preventing him from ascending to the Oval Office as important.

Among likely voters, Clinton's lead swells to eight points (49 percent to 41 percent) and in the 10 states where President Barack Obama's margin of victory in 2012 was less than seven points Clinton leads 47 percent to 39 percent.

The poll was conducted days after an Islamic State sympathizer opened fire on an Orlando nightclub filled with gay patrons, killing 49 before being killed in a shootout with police.

Trump reacted to the tragedy by reasserting his call for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. and criticizing both Clinton and President Obama over what he branded as their "weak" response to radical Islamist terrorism.

Bloomberg Poll has Trump Down Double Digits 

In addition to the Monmouth poll, a recent Bloomberg poll found Clinton with an even larger 12-point lead over Trump at 49 percent to 37 percent. The RealClearPolitics national average shows Clinton ahead by nearly 6 percentage points, a lead that has only grown since late May.

The Monmouth poll also finds Clinton topping Trump among independents (42 percent to 37 percent), women, and people of all ages between 18 and 34 (54 percent to 34 percent) and 35 and 54 year-olds (47 percent to 39 percent). Clinton also leads within the margin of error among those 55 and older (44 percent to 43 percent).

Among registered voters, 49 percent overall said it is "very important" that Trump not become president, while another 10 percent called it "somewhat important."
