Mom Who Beat Teen Daughter on Facebook 'Live' Has No Charges Filed Against Her – Did She Go Too Far?
A Georgia mother's beating of her teenage daughter went viral after the woman posted the harsh discipline on the girl's Facebook page using Facebook Live.
Several media outlets reported that Shanavia Miller's attack on 16-year-old daughter, Nia Green, was provoked by the girl posting a Facebook photo of herself and her boyfriend wearing nothing but a towel that the mom later saw.
During the live incident, the mother also accused the two of having sex in her home.
"You wanna try me, right?" the mom taunts her sobbing daughter before breaking into a flurry of punches all over her body.
Mom Felt Embarrassed
Later, the woman scolds her daughter over embarrassing her and ultimately stares into the camera and shares with onlookers "I'm gonna need y'all to send this viral."
The video immediately sparked debate across social media about the use of corporal punishment and the question of whether the mother went too far in trying to discipline her daughter.
CNN later indicated that the network had tried contacting the mother, but had yet to receive a response. A post on what appears to be her daughter's Facebook page, written by the mother attempts to offer her reasoning.
Mom, Daughter Respond
"I love my daughter with all my heart," the post reads. "Whatever happens after this, oh well, my daughter is not going to disrespect me or herself for nobody ... lesson learned."
The teen also posted her own statement, where she expressed remorse for her actions and love for her mom.
"I know next time to just keep my business to myself," she wrote.
Meanwhile, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Sonny Cohrs said the department had received several calls about the video and the Special Victims Unit had officers speak with the mom and daughter, but no criminal charges are pending.
Although the girl indicated she felt safe in the home, the case has now been referred to the Department of Children and Family Services for follow-up.
