Bruce Wayne's name is synonymous with Batman today, but that wasn't always the case. Once upon a time Wayne was just a little boy, orphaned and left to sit on his parents fortune after they were murdered in cold blood.

Fox's new TV show "Gotham" explores the aftermath of that fateful night and the quest to catch the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Detective James Gordon (who later becomes commissioner of the Gotham City PD) and his partner Harvey Bullock are given the case. 

From the very first time that policeman Gordon interviews Wayne about the particulars of the case two form an inseparable bond. So while the show is undoubtedly about Wayne's origin story, it also reveals much about Gordon's early comings-and-goings as well.

But unlike "Batman Begins," the 2005 Christopher Nolan film that started The Dark Knight Trilogy, "Gotham" won't have little Bruce Wayne suit up. While sadly that means no utility belt or batarang action, it does mean that for the first time, viewers will get to see a cinematic portrayal of Bruce Wayne the man, not the legend.

Besides Bruce Wayne, a cast of characters new and old make will appear in the hour long Fox drama. They include: Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley (later known as Poison Ivy); Selina Kyle (eventually known as Catwoman); Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot (who late becomes the devious Penguin); and Edward Nashton (The Riddler). It will be interesting to see how these eventual super-villain's go about their lives before adopting their criminal alter-ego's.

And while the Batman comic books and graphic novels describe Gotham City in great detail, this show looks to give audiences a true-taste of what it might be like to actually grow up in this fictional sprawling, decaying and iconic city.
