Teenager Commits Suicide After Mom Forbids Facebook: 13-Year-Old Aditi Gupta Hangs Self Over Argument
Aditi Gupta, a 13-year-old Indian girl, committed suicide after her mother forbade her from using Facebook, reports the Daily Mail. This is the second such suicide in as many years.
Reportedly, Aditi Gupta was prohibited by her mother from using the social networking site on the day that the girl killed herself. Her mother admitted to scolding her daughter that morning, as the girl spent too much time on Facebook. She told Aditi, "I want that Facebook account closed by the time I come home." But when she came back from work four hours later for lunch, she found her daughter dead by hanging.
Mohana, Aditi's mother, told the local police that she did not realize her daughter would commit suicide just because of Facebook, which she described as insignificant. "I only told her she was too young to be on Facebook and is wasting her time," she added.
The girl was alone in the home when the incident happened. Mrs. Gupta leaves home at around 9:30 a.m. after her husband has already left for work. Their older son usually lives with his grandmother during the holidays and was also not present.
Netizens had intense arguments on this Facebook-related suicide, with some stating their opinions in the comment section of the Daily Mail. Some considered the suicide silly and sympathized with Mrs. Gupta, who feels responsible for her daughter's death. Others expressed fear for teenagers, as they are not afraid to kill themselves just because of petty squabbles with their parents.
Both Facebook-related suicide cases in India led to debates and discussions concerning the responsibility of parents and its relevance to parenting issues in the modern world like social media activity of children.
To date, investigators in India have not released any conclusion on Facebook-related suicide; without any such conclusion, it may be safer to assume that the girls were already depressed and suicidal and that the Facebook-related arguments were simply the last straw for the two girls.
