'Sons of Anarchy' Season 7 Premiere, Cast News, and Spoilers: Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal Appear on 'The Writers Room'
The "Sons of Anarchy" team was invited to Sundance Channel's "The Writers Room" on Monday, May 12 to discuss writing the epic twists of the biker club hit series. The team also made some of the hardest decisions that resulted in bloody deaths of main characters.
Hosted by comedian and actor Jim Rash, the episode featured creator Kurt Sutter and his wife Katey Sagal, as well as co-executive producers Charles Murray and Mike Daniels. Sutter talked about season 7 and reliving the heart-breaking deaths of Tara and Opie, while Sagal revealed her creative process of playing the show's most hated character, SAMCRO matriarch Gemma Teller.
Murray and Daniels explained that creating the fictional town of Charming and its unique characters that make "SOA" very interesting. They also discussed killing off the popular characters of the series.
"Opie was living the life of Job, where everything was being taken away from him and then he still, because of his friendship, took that death from Jax," said Murray. "That death was based on friendship and I think if you look at all the other deaths, they earn what they earn because of the mayhem that exists, the chaos that exists in their world."
However, Opie's spirit is still with "SOA." "Opie continues to be a character on the show, his death really is something that Jax pivoted off," said Daniels. "He kind of saw it as mandate to fulfill his destiny in a slightly different way. So, I think that part of why it still lives with fans, it's still lives in the show."
The co-executives also said that they are excited to help fans get closure from the final season: "It's nice to know you're satisfying those fans and closing that book and you know there's no better satisfaction than finishing a great book you love and it's nice to be one of the people writing the last chapter with everybody else in that room."
"For us, as writers," Murray added, "That's the excitement of being in the room. We look forward to being able to say 'I don't know' and then having to figure it out. That's the extra incentive, because we're able to still be surprised by the choices that are made."
Filming for season 7 is set to begin in a few weeks and it will premiere in September this year.
