George Alexander Louis: The Story Behind the Royal Baby Name
The name has finally been revealed -- His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis. The royal baby and the third in line to the throne has the world celebrating his arrival. And the festivities and merrymaking are expected to go on for weeks! The baby was born Monday and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
Finally, speculation is over as Kate and William announced the little bundle of joy's name only two days after his birth. According to a report by People, the Queen was spotted visiting the family at Kensington Palace Wednesday to see her grandson and apparently discuss possible baby names with the couple.
And as it turns out little George's name has quite a beautiful history behind it. The name George was taken in honor of the Queen's father who chose the name George VI when he became King in 1936; his life story was portrayed in the movie "The King's Speech." Obviously, the name remains close to the Queen's heart.
In the same report by People, Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine was quoted as saying, "George was a bit of a giveaway -- it was bandied around so much and we expected it. And it is a nice tribute to the Queen's father and grandfather [George V]."
The name Alexander many assume was taken to pay tribute to the Queen whose middle name is "Alexandra". According to the People report, Louis on the other hand may have been chosen to honor the Queen's husband whose grandfather was named "Prince Louis Alexander". It may have also been taken from the little George's father's name William Arthur Philip Louis.
By royal standards, Kate and William's announcement of their baby's name was quick. Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh had the world waiting for a month before announcing the name Charles. Princess Diana and Prince Charles on the other hand took a week before deciding on William's name.
