Lionel Messi Transfer News 2014: Barcelona Will Not Sell Superstar
Barcelona will not sell Lionel Messi. Despite mounting rumors that the Argentine could be on the move, Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu claims that he has no intention of letting his top star leave the club anytime soon.
"We cannot say when it's going to happen because when we do things with our players we try to keep as much confidence as possible," Bartomeu said in an interview with Sky Sports. "What I can say is that we want Messi to be here, he is number one in the world. We need him to be happy and he is very happy in the city of Barcelona, in our club.
"He was almost born as a player here, as he came very young at 13-years-old. [His entire] career [has been] here so the object is for him to stay with Barcelona. I think the members of the club, they can be satisfied because we will have Messi for a lot of years here. We don't sell Messi."
Messi has not had a great 2013-14 season due to a nagging leg injury. He has, however, started to look like the superstar of old and scored two goals against Sevilla this weekend to help Barcelona jump back up to the top of the Spanish League. He now has 11 goals and seven assists on the season; he still trails rival Cristiano Ronaldo by 11 goals this year. Messi has managed four goals in the Copa del Rey and will get a chance to add to that total Wednesday when Barcelona takes on Real Sociedad in the second leg of the semifinal.
