U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders say that Donald Trump must be held accountable
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said two things about Donald J. Trump: hold him accountable for the promises he made to the middle class, and insisting that the president-elect rescind his appointment of Stephen K. Bannon as his chief White House strategist.
As the Democrats were still sad from their loss in last week's poll and desperately try to figure out how to regroup and energized the party now that Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House Mr. Sanders gave encouragement urging them to push forward. These were spoken through a live streamed video with thousand viewers at George Washington University.
According to the New York Times, his speech tackled more on working class issues where Mr. Trump had said that he is going to be the champion of the working class. He reminded the President-elect that they have a list of everything he said during the campaign. Mr. Sanders said that while he disagreed with Mr. Trump on many issues, he hoped to work with him to address income inequality, increase inadequate wages and negotiate new trade deals.
He also said he would push Mr. Trump to raise the federal minimum wage and to ensure at least six mandatory maternity leave.
In connection to climate change which Mr. Trump said that it is just a hoax made by the Chinese government, Mr. Sanders advised him to "read a little about science" and focus on making America rely more on renewable energy sources.
The present wealth and level of income situation of the population of America in which the top one-tenth of one percent owns almost equal to the bottom 90 percent is another point Mr. Sanders emphasized. He recalled what Mr. Trump said about this. "I hear and understand you're worried about the future for your kids and I alone can do something about it".
Mr. Sanders also said that Democrats will be prepared to work with Mr. Trump as long as he is sincere about the promises he made during the campaign but if not they will oppose his economic policies and expose those hypocrisies, as reported by News Thrive.
Another topic Mr. Sanders has criticized in his speech is the appointment Mr. Trump has given to Mr. Stephen K. Bannon as chief strategist and Senior Counselor of his Presidency. Mr. Bannon is the former executive chairman of the Breitbart News which is noted as connected to alt-right that postings supported Mr. Trump in his candidacy.
Mr. Sanders said against Mr. Bannon as the one that will bring anti-Semitic, nationalist and racist. (Mr. Sanders has a Jew descent.) "I call upon Mr. Trump to rescind the appointment that he made of Mr. Bannon," said Mr. Sanders, making a demand that is unlikely to be met. "The president of the United States should not have a racist at his side, unacceptable."
