Apple may have recently unveiled its new and improved dual-camera technology on its recently-released iPhone 7, but rumors abound that the next- generation iPhone might pack an even more impressive camera.

The California tech giant reportedly forged a collaboration with LG Innotek to develop a smartphone camera module specifically designed for 3D photography.

Both Apple and LG have not given any clear timeline for its release, even though speculations on this new technology continue to circulate. With that, many expect that Apple's next-generation product lineup, including the iPhone 8, will come up with this latest technology.

According to The Korean Economic Daily, Apple is now "studying how to apply its 3D camera technology with LG Innotek's smartphone camera. Such joint efforts will likely to bear fruits sometime within the next year."

In an attempt to add 3D technology, Apple is utilizing the Israeli camera technology startup company Linx, which was acquired by the company back in 2015. Linx holds the expertise in allowing apps to freely use the 3D information by the camera on the device, such as the ability to refocus the image after it has been captured, 3D object modeling and real-time background replacement for video call, reported by Gadgets 360.

In its larger iPhone 7 Plus model, the Cupertino-based company has already used LG Innotek's dual-cam solution. In fact, it's precisely this technology that Apple leveraged to offer its much touted Portrait Mode.

While detailed information remains unavailable so far, Apple's ambition to bring 3D photography technology to its next generation technological lineup could mean the manufacturer is implementing LG's dual-cam tech in all of its next lineup phones.

Another rumor says that the next-gen iPhone camera is going to support features in 2D and 3D for augmented reality gimmicks that will make easier for users to interact with the physical world in new meaningful ways.
