Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid Spanish League 2013-14: Revisiting the History This Season Between 2 Contenders
The Spanish League title will be decided on Saturday when Atletico Madrid and Barcelona face off at the Camp Nou. Los Colchoneros were seen as the favorites to take the trophy, but some slip-ups in recent weeks have given Barcelona a chance to lift the trophy on home turf with a win. Barcelona has also struggled in recent weeks with draws against Getafe and Elche in the last two weeks of the season.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two sides and surprisingly it will be the most important of all. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid first encountered one another in the Spanish Super Cup last fall. The first game in Madrid ended in a 1-1 draw with an equalizing goal from Neymar that would ultimately decide the tie when the two teams tied 0-0 at the Camp Nou. Then they renewed their respective rivalries in January in an exciting 0-0 draw.
Few expected the teams to meet again until the final game of the season, but the two teams were coincidentally drawn in the Champions League quarterfinals. The first game the Camp Nou played was yet another draw, the fourth of the matchup. However the 1-1 score placed tremendous pressure on Barcelona to win as a 0-0 draw would have eliminated them thanks to the away goal. The second leg in Madrid went poorly for Los Cules. Barcelona looked overwhelmed by Madrid's aggressive play and wound up losing 1-0. The team could have easily lost 3-0 or 4-0 if not for some fortunate posts from Madrid's attackers.
So after all that tension, Atletico Madrid has managed to win one of five matches; the rest have ended in draws. But none of that matters anymore because both sides will be battling in what has turned out to be a final.
A victor is not necessary to determine the Champion. Atletico currently has 89 points this season while Barcelona has 86. Since the teams tied in the first game, Barcelona would hold the tiebreaker of head-to-head matches if they won and tie Atletico in points. A victory for Atletico would obviously give them the crown; a draw would do the same.
Who does this mean more to? Atletico Madrid has a chance to walk away with two trophies if they win or draw in this game. Next weekend, the team will do battle with Real Madrid in Lisbon for the Champions League title. But winning two trophies would make them the best team in Spain and in the world. Barcelona, on the other hand, has nothing left but this trophy. The team already lost the Copa del Rey Final against Real Madrid and would wind up without a single trophy for the first time since 2007-08 if they falter in this game. A win here would also take off some of the taint from an otherwise woeful season.
Neymar seems unlikely to play in the decider, meaning that Messi will have his moment to shine. He has not scored a single goal against Atletico in 2013-14 and this would be an ideal moment for him to shine. A great deal has been made about his "poor season" and a big game would give him a big opportunity to not only prove his critics wrong, but would give him much needed confidence heading into the World Cup where the pressure will be tantamount.
For Xavi, Carles Puyol and Victor Valdes, a win would crown the end of an era for the players. Two of them will likely not play in this match (Valdes will certainly not make an appearance) while Xavi is expected to leave the club after this season. Look for him to have an emotion game in front of the home fans.
Speaking of home, Barcelona has a record of 16 wins, one loss and one draw; Atletico has a road record of 13 wins, one draw and four losses. Barcelona clearly has the upper hand in that respect, but the team is susceptible enough on the backend to implode.
Who do you think wins this game and lifts the Spanish League title?
