The football world was shocked upon hearing about the untimely death of Ecuador striker Christian "Chucho" Benitez, who suffered a cardio respiratory arrest on Monday. He was 27.

According to reports by the Washington Post, the Ecuadoran Football Federation (FEF) issued a statement explaining his death, "Benitez, who was already [with] his new club in Qatar, had a severe stomach pain, [and] was rushed to a hospital, where after a few hours suffered cardio respiratory arrest, which ended his life."

Benitez had not complained of any health problems in the past. A day before he died, Benitez played for El Jaish in Qatar prompting speculation that the country's hot and humid weather conditions played a part in his untimely death, but that has not been confirmed.   

Benitez is undoubtedly an important component of the Ecuadoran team. With a record of 24 international goals, he holds the third highest score on the Ecuador National Team.

A statement released by the El Jaish Sports Club posted in part by the Washington Post expressed a deep mourning for this great loss. "His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character."  

The outpouring of disbelief, shock, and mourning both from fans and close friends continues to flood social media.

In a report by CNN, one of Benitez's closest friends and former teammate at the El Nacional struggled to accept the loss. On Twitter he wrote, "This pain [is] very strong my brother but we love you."

Another one of his former teammates at Birmingham City Craig Gardner was still in disbelief. Posting on Twitter, "Can't believe Christian Benitez has died. I had the pleasure to play with him. He was a top bloke. My thoughts go out to his family."
