‘Marvel's Luke Cage’ Season 2 News: Series Nominated for 2017 NAACP Image Award
Marvel's "Luke Cage" is in luck for the second time this December. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announced Mike Colter as a nominee for its 2017 Image Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. This comes after news that Netflix will be renewing the superhero series for a second season.
The show follows Luke Cage (played by Colter) as he navigates the gang-riddled streets of Harlem as an adolescent and develops into a superhero with extraordinary strength and unbreakable skin. Marvel's "Luke Cage" is the third series in Netflix's Marvel lineup, following "Daredevil and Jessica Jones" and preceding "Iron Fist and The Defenders". As with "Daredevil and Jessica Jones," Netflix will be renewing the show for a second season.
In an interview with Vulture, Colter praises the show for promoting alternative ways of thinking about urban African-American men, "We want to show people that there are positive images to be had from black men, especially ones in hoodies."
Maureen Ryan, for Variety, praises Colter for portraying "a great deal of soulfulness and intelligence" through his character, while showing "beautifully calibrated shadings of pain and rage." The show's depiction of a bulletproof superhero deadset on saving Harlem cannot come at a better time in racially charged America. Multiple unjust and fatal police intervention against the African-American community, like the Trayvon Martin case, has created an incensed racial climate in the United States. Ryan suggests that Marvel's "Luke Cage" thus provides a cathartic experience for its viewers who can identify with the emotion and complexities of the lead character.
On February 11, 2017, American comedian, chef, writer, and host, Anthony Anderson, will announce the winners for the 48th NAACP Image Awards.
