Cain Velasquez Fight With Fabricio Werdum At UFC 207 Ruled Out Due To Injury Concerns By Nevada State Athletic Commission
It looks like curtains for Cain Velasquez as he is ruled out of his UFC 207 fight with Fabricio Werdum on medical grounds by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
In an article published by Fox Sports, an unconfirmed UFC report says that Velasquez will not be allowed to fight on the basis of an interview in which Velasquez disclosed that he may be up for surgery on his back after UFC 207 ends.
In the interview, Velasquez had confessed that he was applying Cannabidiol (CBD) oil to relieve pain while training. Based on this confession and Velasquez's previous medical issues, the commission opined that he should not be fighting the UFC 207 to protect him from further aggravation to his injury.
The commission felt that it had to intervene to discharge its responsibility to ensure Velasquez suffers no further harm despite strong financial motivation to compete. It felt that Velasquez would be at high risk if he competed with his physical condition due to injury.
Fox Sports also reported that Velasquez, a former champion in the heavyweight category, has been missing many bouts due to injury.
In another report published by MMA Junkie, Velasquez's progress to be among the top heavyweights in the world has been hampered by injuries. Velasquez had secured second rank in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings.
Velasquez had competed all of two times in the last two years and was scheduled to fight Werdum in UFC 207. This would have been a rematch which Velasquez would have liked to fight knowing that the last time he had fought with Werdum at UFC 188 he had lost the title to Werdum.
It is a moot point whether UFC has the wherewithal to find a substitute for Velasquez to fight Werdum on December 30 in the UFC 207 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
