MLB The Show 14 PS4 & PS3 Gameplay & Review: Get Your Hands on the Hottest Baseball Video Game Around
Fancy yourself a pitcher? Why not play a game of baseball? You could round up a few of your buddies and head out to the local field to play ball. Or not. Physical exertion is no longer necessary to play America's pastime. That's because MLB 14: The Show is here and the game of baseball will never be the same.
Available exclusively for Sony consoles MLB 14: The Show is the only officially licensed baseball game out there. The version we'll be focusing on in this article is for the PlayStation 4 console, but don't fret, PS3 owners as well as Vita gamers will be able to get in on the action as well.
What's so great about MLB 14: The Show on PS4? Well, all 30 MLB stadiums have been completely rebuilt from the ground up for the PS4 version. Utilizing the new computational and graphics power courtesy of the PS4's eight core CPU and bleeding edge GPU, the series has never looked better.
Everything from the amount of mud on a batter's helmet to the way light reflects off of the Green Monster in Fenway Park has been improved. More dynamic crowds also exist, meaning that when you take a gander into the crowd you'll see hundreds, not dozens, of unique fans. The best feature of MLB 14: The Show has to be that you can pitch for hours on end without ever needing Tommy John Surgery.
Unfortunately, all this visual grandiosity has exasperated an old problem: load times. They are longer then ever so it may be wise to go out and buy yourself a hybrid drive or SSD for your PS4. The slow rotating 5400rpm drive just can't keep up with the sheer enormity of this game. Thankfully while pitching, fielding, butt-slapping or hitting, the game doesn't skip-a-beat.
Another issue is online gameplay via PlayStation Plus. The online mode still isn't as polished as it should be, especially when considering that this game is on new, current generation hardware. In fact, according to Joystiq, MLB 14: The Show for PS3 and PS4 are identical when it comes to gameplay. The difference is in the presentation and sound quality.
Regardless of these minor issues, in MLB 14: The Show you're the star. You have the power to pilot a team from Spring training all the way to October. Anybody standing in your way isn't just mere competition, they're the devil incarnate. Will you allow them to grab the World Series title from your grasp?
What do you like most about MLB 14: The Show? Is it the polished game mechanics, the beautiful Full HD graphics, the slick frame rate or none of the above? Let us know in the comments section below.
