In the past decade, "Final Fantasy" has become a household name among US and Western gamers. Japanese game publisher Square Enix has declared that they want to market their other role-playing game franchise "Dragon Quest" to be as popular.

"Dragon Quest" Not as Popular as "Final Fantasy" in West

"Dragon Quest" is a franchise that is well-known in Japan and has been sold in many consoles. According to game producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto, Square Enix will dedicate much of its time and effort to producing more titles of the franchise in West, especially in the US, IGN reported.

While "Dragon Quest" is known for its cartoonish style and while gamers may turn away from it, Fujimoto notes that players will find the franchise surprising plot-wise. The gaming company also believes that the franchise has the potential to do well in the Western market.

"Dragon Quest" Art by Akira Toriyama; Why it Sells in Japan

"Dragon Quest" Executive Producer Yu Miyake revealed in an interview that the art of the franchise is made by none other than "Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama. He adds that players of the franchise are varied from schoolchildren to middle-aged people but the cartoonish style doesn't turn them off from playing the game.

Miyake explains that there is a stigma in the US and the West regarding this kind of art style, but if they play "Dragon Quest" they will quickly find out the games are mature after all, Game Zone reported. The latest title in the franchise is "Dragon Quest XI" and it is expected to be released in Japan by May 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS and Switch.
